Katarina began skating when she was five years old. She was able to prove her talent and gain entry into a Karl-Marx-Stadt special school specifically designed for gifted kids. This was where she got to know their coach Jutta Muller. Witt made her mark when she was ranked second at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. In the years since, Witt's grace and beauty have captured the interest of all. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt won a close fought contest to win the women's figure skating gold medal. Then, four years after that she was able to claim an additional competitive race. In fact, she was not a winner in the free skating contest but won gold based on results during the compulsory figure and short program. Witt was the only woman after Sonja Haenie to win an apex figure skater. Hall of Fame Witt was capable of returning to figure skating following her successes in the film industry as an actor. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. People were captivated by her performance despite the fact that she only was seventh. Witt received her induction to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame on the 15th of April, 1995.
